Erica Avila

President

Erica was born in El Paso and spent much of her adolescents in San Angelo, Texas before returning to El Paso to be closer to her family. She is currently the lead therapists at a pediatric rehabilitation clinic on the eastside. Erica received a Bachelors of Science in Education/Communication Disorders and a Masters of Arts in Communication Disorders from New Mexico State University. Erica's therapeutic interests include resonance, VPI, Cleft Lip and Palate, pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders, and orofacial myofunctional disorders. Erica is currently completing her certification in Kinesio taping techniques for various therapy applications. Erica is enthusiastic about joining EPSHA's board and looks forward to working with our community of Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologist.

Alejandra Carrillo

President - Elect

Alejandra Carrillo, M.S., CCC-SLP, received her Master of Science a Degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2013 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish with a minor in Speech-Pathology in 2011 also from the University of Texas at El Paso. Alejandra is a school based speech-language pathologist who works primarily with students on the autism spectrum.

Melissa Ortiz

Heading

Melissa was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and graduated with a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2013. Since graduation, Melissa has had jobs in the medical setting working with adult and geriatric populations, and is currently practicing as a pediatric speech-language pathologist in an outpatient pediatric clinic. Melissa has acquired certifications in elastic therapeutic taping using Kinesio-Tape Method, VitalStim Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, Interactive Metronome, and has received training in Aquatic Therapy via Aquatic Therapy University. Melissa's professional interest include the use of Kinesio-Tape to address motor and sensory impairments that contribute to speech, language, and feeding disorders, the treatment of feeding and swallowing disoerder in adult and pediatric populations, and the importance of sensory integration for feeding difficulties. Melissa is very excited to serve the El Paso SLP community as a part of the EPSHA Board.

Karla Tinoco

Co-Treasurer

Karla was born and raised in El Paso but went away for college where she graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelors in Speech, Language, and Hearing and went to San Antonio to obtain her masters in Communication Disorders from our Lady of the lake in 2011. She worked in a school and skilled nursing home in San Antonio before moving back to El Paso. She has since been working at University Medical Center for the past 3.5 years and loves every minute of it. Her particular area of interest is working with dysphagia in both adults and pediatrics and she also likes working with people who have suffered a head injury whether TBI or stroke. Karla also spends some time with local SLPs educating the community about head injuries.

Sylva Paulina Contreras

Sylvia Paulina was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and graduated with a Bachelors of Multidisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2015. Since graduation, Sylvia Paulina began her journey as a Bilingual Speech Language Pathologist Assistant at an outpatient pediatric clinic. Sylvia Paulina is eager to serve El Paso's community as an officer and member of EPSHA.
